Torroella de Montgrí Festival 2022
This international music festival is held annually in Torroella de Montgrí and is divided into two sections: classical music and world music. In 2013 the festival moved from the church of San Genís, where it had been celebrated since its beginnings, to the Auditorio del Espai Ter. Instrumental and vocal groups dedicated to the traditional music of the five continents offer great evening concerts. International courses in interpretation and musical composition are also given with first-level teachers in the field, as well as other associated activities.
The origins of the International Music Festival of Torroella de Montgrí can be found in 1980, the year in which the first cycle of music was held, composed of only five concerts. As in its origins, the festival takes place in Gothic and Renaissance architectural spaces such as the church of Sant Genís, the Palacio Solterra and the Plaza de la Vila.
Although the festival is young, the musical tradition of this town dates back to the Middle Ages. At that time, Torroella de Montgrí was a real town that in the 15th century hosted the construction of the Music Chapel for religious reasons, something that had a decisive influence on the musical area of the locality.
The central axis of its programming is western classical music, but without closing the door to other types of music and culture. Since its origins, this festival has been the paradigm of balance between cultured and popular music. The Festival de Torroella de Montgrí is an event born from civil society and with the support of more than five hundred members who help them follow a path that lasts more than forty years.
The festival is celebrated every year and takes place in the church of Sant Genís and in the town square, two emblematic sites of the Costa Brava that allow you to enjoy the performances of great soloists, outstanding chamber groups, prestigious choirs and symphony orchestras arrived from all over the world.
The first International Music Festival of Torroella de Montgrí was held in 1980 and since 1982 it has been a member of the European Association of Festivals. Looking ahead to the summer of 2022, the festival will resume its usual activity and will offer half a hundred concerts and activities, both in Torroella and Estartit.
